Day 17: Community Surveillance at the Heart of Our Project

Today, let's delve into one of the key components of our conservation project: surveillance and control within the concessions, with a clear goal: zero deforestation.

Our quest to preserve these areas of rainforest partly relies on effective community surveillance and increased control over human activities. The aim is to maintain anthropogenic deforestation at zero, an audacious yet essential mission.

At the core of our initiative are the forest surveillance committees. Their role extends beyond patrolling the concessions. They are educators, raising community awareness about the vital importance of the forest and its conservation. They also act as protectors, preventing uncontrolled expansion of agricultural frontiers, deforestation, illicit crop establishment, and illegal hunting.

Covering a vast area (over 9,000 hectares), the three conservation concessions supported by our project require strategic surveillance points. These control posts serve as shelters in the heart of the jungle, where forest rangers plan patrols to the most remote areas. Our project aims to establish a control post in the Gran Ushachi concession and enhance two existing posts within the Maquisapa and Cerro Blanco concessions - truly base camps for forest defense. Two satellite surveillance tools, Geobosques developed by the Peruvian Ministry of Environment and Global Forest Watch, are invaluable aids in this control effort. By issuing potential deforestation alerts, they enable us to conduct on-ground checks during surveillance patrols. Every committee formed, every patrol sent out, every surveillance post built contributes to our commitment to the conservation of the Peruvian Amazon.
